Being left-handed does not mean being retarded, handicapped or ill! Being left-handed does not need treatment. You can say the same thing about being ambidextrous (that is being able to use with the same ease both hands).

In her book "Left brain, Right brain", Sally P. Springer explains why people display such differences in using some parts of their body. It’s about developing and using especially one of the cerebral hemispheres. The left hemisphere controls the right part of the body and the right hemisphere controls the left part. The fact that connections are faster on one hemisphere leads to the differentiation between left and right-handed people.

In conclusion the left-handed are predominantly coordinated by the right hemisphere, which is responsible with space orientation, imagination, creativity. The right-handed are predominantly coordinated by the left hemisphere, which is responsible for logic, analysis, verbal functions and mathematics. With the ambidextrous, the hemispheres are equally active.

A left-handed child is perfectly normal! His intelligence can be equal to a right-handed one. Mental retardation just like the quality of a genius cannot be established by being left-handed.

The first signs of being left-handed appear in early childhood, in small daily activities when using mostly the left foot or hand.

If you have indeed discovered that your little one is left-handed, just let him be left-handed! By no means attempt to force him to use his other foot or hand. I’ve frequently heard of parents, teachers, grandparents or other people who used all kinds of methods, some quite barbarian, like tying the left hand to the back of the child to prevent him from using it.

As well as traumatizing the child, you’ll make him clumsy, slow in acquiring all the necessary skills, he’ll do things slower and worse than if he were doing them with his left hand. You’ll have a child with uneven handwriting and this will affect a great deal his school results. The only real problem that may occur with a left-handed child is about acquiring handwriting the wrong way (of the graphism). But this is not a rule and can be easily corrected with enough patience and exercises.

Let your child be left-handed! At most, try to check whether he’s ambidextrous or not! But by no means try to force him!
